Ontario Autism Program Complete Guide for Families
The Ontario Autism Program (OAP) is the main provincial funding route for children with autism in Ontario. Here is everything you need to know to access funding for ABA therapy and other services.
How to Apply for OAP Funding
Step-by-step process from registration to your first therapy session.
Get an Autism Diagnosis
Your child must have a written ASD diagnosis from a qualified professional such as a pediatrician, psychologist, or psychiatrist. The diagnosis must include your child's full name, date of birth, date of assessment, and the diagnosing professional's credentials.
Create an AccessOAP Account
Register through AccessOAP, the Ontario Autism Program's independent intake organization. Create an account at accessoap.ca and submit your child's diagnosis documentation to begin the registration process.
Complete the Determination of Needs
Once registered, families typically complete a Determination of Needs assessment, a structured interview that identifies your child's support needs and determines the level of funding available.
Choose Advance Academy as Your Provider
Once approved, select Advance Academy as your registered OAP service provider for ABA therapy, parent coaching, or children's assessments. We handle the rest.
Therapy Begins
OAP funding is applied toward your child's therapy sessions. No upfront costs, no complicated billing. We guide you through every step of the process.
OAP Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for OAP funding your child must have a written ASD diagnosis from a qualified professional, be an Ontario resident, and be under 18 years of age. There is no income test for OAP funding.

Evidence-Based Tips for Parents of Children with Autism
Practical, BCBA-informed strategies Canadian parents can use every day to support their child's development at home.
Keep Daily Routines Consistent
Children with autism thrive on predictability. Use visual schedules for daily routines like morning, mealtime, and bedtime. Consistent routines reduce anxiety and help your child know what to expect throughout the day.
Use Positive Reinforcement
Catch your child doing things right and immediately praise or reward the behavior. Positive reinforcement is the most powerful tool in ABA therapy. Find what motivates your child: praise, stickers, screen time, or preferred activities.
Support Communication Every Moment
Narrate daily activities, expand your child's words, and give them time to respond. If your child uses one word, model two. Communication skills grow fastest when practiced throughout the day, not just during therapy sessions.
Practice Skills in Natural Settings
Skills your child learns in therapy generalize faster when practiced at home, at the grocery store, at the park, and during family activities. Every environment is a learning opportunity, not just formal therapy sessions.
Take Care of Yourself Too
Caregiver wellbeing directly impacts your child's outcomes. Connect with parent support groups, reach out to your BCBA when you are struggling, and remember that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
Track Your Child's Progress
Keep simple notes on new skills, behaviors, and changes you observe at home. Share these observations with your BCBA therapist. Your day-to-day data is invaluable for adjusting therapy goals and strategies.
